Nau mai!

… Which is Maori for welcome! So it’s been just over a month since my first post, and a lot has happened. Some good, some bad, some in between. But most importantly: tickets have been booked.

There has, however, been a slight change of plans. As my mother said to me the other day, quoting John Lennon:

“Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.”

And that’s exactly what happened. So my travels will still take me around the world, albeit in a slightly different way. Instead of going on one, long, fly-all-around-the-world trip, I will be making several trips in the coming couple of years (but then, of course, life will happen to me while I’m making these plans, so there is little point in me saying this).

But the first trip has been decided upon: I will finally go to Australia! For three months, I will travel around Australia and New Zealand. The first three weeks I will be in Perth (and surrounding deserts, beaches, and national parks) with my mum and my brother. After that, we will go our separate ways: they go back home, I continue on to Sydney. From there, I don’t know.

There has been one major change of plans, though: there is a return date. Because return tickets are cheaper than one-way, I have booked myself a return flight exactly three months after I leave. Will I take this flight? Time will tell. Life will probably get in the way. Who knows.

Keep coming back to this blog to see how my plans develop, and especially once I set off. If you know anyone on the other side of the world, tell them to get in touch. The best way to travel is alongside a local, and that’s exactly what I intend to do.
